South Africa becomes full member of the GI WACAF Project

In February 2016, GI WACAF welcomed South Africa as a full participating member of the Project. The South African Focal Point to GI WACAF has been identified as Mr. Metse Ralephenya, Director Maritime Safety, Security & Environment (Department of Transport).

In 2015, GI WACAF delivered its first national workshop in South Africa (focusing upon Incident Management System) and has since been in close correspondence with the relevant authorities regarding further collaboration.

The membership of South Africa coincides with a major Government initiative, Operation Phakisa, to unlock the economic potential of Southern Africa. Of the various tasks under the initiative, offshore oil and gas exploration and exploitation is identified as critical.

Several Government Task Forces have been established to address possible risks associated with oil and gas development, and a key role for GI WACAF is to support these groups in their efforts to strengthen national oil spill response capability.
